CASCADES AGUA AZUL

Cave Under the Cascades de Agua AzulCascades de Agua Azul in Chiapas Mexico

Located about 100 miles northeast of San Cristobal on the way to the Mayan ruins of Palenque is a series of white frothy waterfalls and crystalline blue pools, which lend the name Agua Azul or "Blue Water". The crystalline blue waters get there color by the large amount of limestone deposits on the rocky river bed. The limestone rich water cascades down a series of these natural dams and ends in the clear, waist-deep Shumulhá River. At the bottom of the waterfalls are several pools that allow for swimming. From the parking lot there a several veiwpoints for photos and sightseeing. Agua Azul is tourists friendly, with small restaurants and T-shirt vendors lining the river all the way to the top of the series of waterfalls. Despite the development, it is thrilling to see the crosses lined up on the shore opposite the biggest waterfall, nicknamed "Licuadora" (blender). Most of the crosses are marked DEP, or "descansar en paz" and presumably mark the passing of someone who got just a bit too close to the falls. For a different vantage point you can hike down the canyon to bathe in a series of interconnected pools.

Best Times to See Agua Azul

The rainy season between May and September offers the heaviest water flow, however, the rains during this period stir the silt from the river beds and the beautiful hues of blue, green and turquoise reflected in the waters may not be seen. Although during this time the water can give the apperance of brown muddy water, the falls at Agua azul are really spectacular all-year round. Agua Azul is most impressive during the dry season (November thru March). Six-hour trips to Palenque from San Cristobal de las Casas which include visits to Agua Azul and Misol-Há, cost about $10 per person.

Note: The currents can be strong and the waterfalls can be dangerous. If you are not a strong swimmer you may just want to watch. Make sure you have Mexico Travel Insurance in case of medical emergency.
