The Waterfall of Misol Ha in Chiapas Mexico The Waterfall of Misol Ha in Chiapas Mexico

Located about 110 miles northeast of San Cristobal on the way to the Mayan ruins of Palenque is Misol-Ha (meaning "Streaming Water"), in the "Chol" tribe area of Chiapas. Misol Ha is one of the state's most wonderful natural sights as the river glides off the edge of a cliff and some 35 meters (120 feet) down into a deep pool of water surrounded by lush vegetation. If you decide to explore you can venture along a small trail that will take you behind the waterfall. There are some caves behind, which local people (waiting nearby) will give you a guided tour of in return for a small tip. The caves eventually lead to a subterranean pool. Misol-Ha is less developed than Agua Azul, but is worth the 10 minutes spent on the side journey for the photo opportunity and the chance to break up the trip. The waterfalls at Misol Ha offer basic camping facilities, a small restaurant and restrooms.

Best Times to See The Misol Ha Waterfall

The rainy season between May and September offers the heaviest water flow, however, the rains during this period stir the silt from the river beds and the beautiful hues of blue, green and turquoise reflected in the waters may not be seen. Although during this time the water can give the apperance of brown muddy water, the falls at Misol Ha are really spectacular all-year round. Miso Ha is most impressive during the dry season (November thru March). Six-hour trips to Palenque from San Cristobal de las Casas which include visits to Agua Azul and Misol-Há, cost about $10 per person.

Note: The currents can be strong and the waterfalls can be dangerous. If you are not a strong swimmer you may just want to watch. Make sure you have Mexico Travel Insurance in case of medical emergency.
